Well, what happened to the coal industry still allows for some hope. Trump promised to save coal, but he didn't. We burned less and less coal during his presidency; now he's stopped talking about it. Same thing will happen to oil & gas if people and businesses stop buying it. Politicians follow the money. When push comes to shove, it's the decisions of hundreds of millions of individual people that determines where the money flows.
